APPLE BLOSSOM
Farmers Market Sunshade | Ann Arbor | Call for Artist | 2024
My vision for the farmers market sunshade is to create an innovative, site-specific installation with a distinctive visual identity that celebrates both community and place. The design is inspired by the Michigan state flower, the apple blossom—one of the most fragrant and beautiful flowering species of apple.
The delicate form of the blossom serves as both a symbolic and structural reference, transforming the sunshade into a welcoming canopy that evokes growth, renewal, and the region's rich agricultural heritage. By interpreting the organic geometry of the flower through contemporary design, the installation will provide shade while creating a memorable landmark that enhances the market experience.
More than a functional structure, the project is intended as a work of public art that brings together nature, design, and community. It invites visitors to gather, connect, and appreciate the beauty of Michigan's landscape while celebrating the farmers, growers, and artisans who sustain it.
The open sky will become my canvas. Lightweight aluminum frames, shaped to echo the delicate forms of apple blossoms, will be filled with vibrant, high-performance exterior fabrics. The resulting canopy will evoke a contemporary stained-glass ceiling, filtering natural light into luminous colors that shift throughout the day. As sunlight passes through the fabric, it will cast ever-changing patterns of colored light and shadow across the ground, creating a dynamic and immersive environment.
I will carefully research and specify aesthetically compelling, weather-resistant materials with a high percentage of recycled content, reinforcing the project's commitment to sustainability. My goal is to create an artwork that is not only visually striking but also experiential—an installation that people can walk beneath, linger within, and interact with. As the colors, light, and shadows change with the movement of the sun, visitors will experience the work as a living composition, encouraging moments of wonder, play, and connection.
The sunshade will incorporate the existing festoon lights. Additional energy efficient lights could be integrated later. Apple blossoms vary in size between 8’ and 16’.
